Freetown: The newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yong, has commended the country's safety, security, and economic development during a courtesy call on the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu. The visit, which took place at the headquarters of the Sierra Leone Police, formed part of Ambassador Yong's familiarization engagements with key state institutions since assuming office in the country.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Ambassador Yong expressed satisfaction with the prevailing security situation in Sierra Leone, noting that the peaceful environment has significantly contributed to economic growth and improved business opportunities. 'Sierra Leone is safer than many other countries, and I am impressed with the social and economic progress under the strong leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio,' the ambassador stated. He added that the stability and good governance in the country have created an enabling environment for development and improved the lives of citizens.
Ambassador Yong further highlighted the strong bilateral relations between China and Sierra Leone, emphasizing that the partnership has continued to grow through increased trade and investment. He noted that several Chinese companies are currently investing in key sectors across the country. Among the major Chinese supported projects he cited are the construction of the Fish Harbour at Black Johnson Beach, the rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens Stadium, the ongoing upgrading of the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital, and the implementation of Smart City initiatives.
The ambassador also stressed that one of the core mandates of the Chinese Embassy is to encourage Chinese nationals living and working in Sierra Leone to be law abiding, peaceful, and respectful of the country's culture, traditions, and religious values. He concluded by assuring the Inspector General of Police of the embassy's continued cooperation and full support to the Sierra Leone Police in promoting peace and security.
Responding, Inspector General Sellu expressed appreciation for the long-standing relationship between China and Sierra Leone, describing it as a partnership that has significantly contributed to national development. He recalled that the Police Headquarters on George Street currently undergoing refurbishment was originally constructed by the Chinese government about fifty years ago. IGP Sellu also informed the ambassador that the Sierra Leone Police has benefited from capacity building and logistical support from the Chinese government through previous diplomatic engagements. The police chief further disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police has established a special liaison desk to facilitate coordination between Chinese investors and the Chinese Embassy. He assured Ambassador Yong of the Sierra Leone Police's continued support and cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of Chinese nationals and investors operating in the country.
