Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ statement upon arrival at the EU General Affairs Council (GAC) (Brussels, 13.12.2022)

“We need to send the message that candidate countries such as Turkey cannot threaten EU member states with missile attacks”, underscored Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today upon arrival at the EU General Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, whose agenda includes the Commission’s report on the conclusions on enlargement, which also concerns Turkey.

Furthermore, referring to the pending decisions on the energy crisis, Mr. Varvitsiotis stated that the proposals tabled by Greece for institutional interventions, such as the imposition of a price cap on natural gas, are still on the negotiating table because they have the support of 14 other member states.

Lastly, Mr. Varvitsiotis emphasized the importance of “completing the investigation on transparency in the decisions of the European Parliament as soon as possible”, noting that “recent revelations have affected its prestige” and stressed the need of making decisions on the advertising and promotion of MEPs so as to ensure maximum transparency.
