Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis spoke of the developments in the Ukrainian crisis and the problem of energy efficiency that will arise in Europe, in the event of an armed conflict war between Russia and Ukraine, in an interview with OPEN TV’s show “Ora Ellados” and journalists Akis Pavlopoulos and Eulambia Revi.

“There is a need for diplomatic action and Europe has an even greater need for diplomacy”, the Alternate Minister stressed, also noting that “European Union member states will find it difficult to tackle an energy crisis that would be the result of a possible Russian-Ukrainian war, regarding the quantities of natural gas that we have at our disposal”. That is why, as he said, Greece is preparing, reminding that yesterday, during a meeting under the Prime Minister, all possible scenarios were examined in order for our country to have sufficient gas. At the same time, he stressed the need for a uniform approach to the issue of energy efficiency at the European level.

Regarding the Greek community in Mariupol, Ukraine, Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that Diaspora Greeks have centuries-old roots in the region and that Mariupol is located on the border between the area controlled by Russian separatists and the area still controlled by Kyiv, and this places it in the frontline of a possible conflict.
