Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, had a meeting with Japanese Digital Minister, Taro Kono, at the beginning of his visit to Japan.
The meeting with Mr.Kono focused on the potential for deepening technological cooperation between the two countries. The mutual willingness to exchange know-how on new technologies, internet services, and artificial intelligence was expressed during the meeting. Mr Varvitsiotis assured Mr Kono that the Digital Transformation is a priority for the Greek government and informed him about the policies adopted by Greece to achieve the Digital Transition.
At the same time, regional and global security challenges were discussed, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific region, as Mr. Kono is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Japan.
For his part, Mr. Varvitsiotis briefed him on Turkey’s continued unlawful conduct and escalation in Turkey’s rhetoric, which directly threatens Greek sovereignty. He made special reference to the violation of the Lausanne Treaty, which, as he noted, was also signed by Japan, and pointed out that it will not be revised to serve the neo-Ottoman vision. He also stressed the need for absolute respect for International Law, especially the Convention on the Law of the Sea, to which Japan, as an island state, also attaches particular importance.
