Alleged Suicide Reported at Outapi After ECN Generator Theft

Outapi: The police in the Omusati Region are investigating a case in which a 33-year-old man reportedly committed suicide by hanging after he allegedly stole petrol from a generator.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Namibian Police Force's Omusati Regional Commander, Ismael Basson, stated that the incident occurred on Thursday at Ohamwaala village. It is alleged that the deceased hanged himself from a tree.

It was further alleged that the deceased stole the generator used by Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) officials, where he was employed, in order to extract the petrol. During the process, the generator burst into flames. The suspect then ran into a house and was later discovered hanging.

The next of kin have been informed, and police investigations into the matter continue.

In an unrelated case, NamPol in the Omusati Region have arrested a 37-year-old woman in connection with the theft and burning of ECN materials at Ombwalyalyatotina location in Outapi on Thursday morning. Basson said the incident occurred around 06h00 when ECN officials allegedly worked together to remove a generator and a jerrycan from an ECN vehicle. The suspects allegedly took the stolen materials to their homes and later both the generator and jerrycan were burned.

The materials, valued at N.dollars 7,400, were recovered but were damaged by the fire.
