Nairobi: The Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice has validated its performance contract for the financial year 2024/2025. The validation exercise was led by Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, Mr. Eliud Owalo, and attended by Attorney General Dorcas Oduor along with various heads of technical departments at the Attorney General’s Boardroom. The focus of the exercise was to confirm the areas that the Office of the Attorney General intends to prioritize during the upcoming financial year.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Deputy Chief of Staff, who oversees Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President, visited the AG’s office in preparation for the signing of the performance contract for the financial year 2024/25 with the President. Mr. Owalo stated, “We are validating the core areas the office of the Attorney General is mandated to implement.” These core areas include facilitating good governance and respect for the rule of la
w through efficient public legal services and promoting human rights. The office also provides legal services to the government and the public, represents the National government in civil proceedings and other matters before courts and tribunals, promotes the rule of law, and protects public interest and human rights.
The responsibilities of the AG’s office further extend to promoting transparency, accountability, ethics, and integrity, facilitating constitutional implementation, and driving policy, legal, and institutional reforms in several domains including justice administration, electoral reforms, and legal education. Additionally, the office provides national registration services for marriages, societies, coat of arms, and adoptions, enhances access to justice through legal aid, and oversees legal matters related to estates and trusts.
During the meeting, the Attorney General discussed the progress made in implementing directives from the 2nd National Executive Retreat in Naivasha, which focused on ‘
Building Momentum for Better Service Delivery’. Attorney General Oduor committed to strengthening legal services to support the Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda (BETA), Kenya Vision 2030, and other national priorities. She emphasized the intent to enhance adherence to the rule of law and facilitate the enactment of relevant laws and regulations.
The directives also include finalizing the recruitment, selection, and deployment of State Counsels to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and Counties in collaboration with the Public Service Commission. Additionally, the State Law Office is to work with the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy to develop an electronic Case Management System.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs Aurelia Rono, the Principal Secretary for Cabinet Affairs Dr. Idris Dakota, and the Principal Administrative Secretary in charge of Performance Management Joshua Mwiranga.
