Agriculture Plays Vital Role in Ethiopia’s Economic Development, Ministry Says


ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s agriculture sector has become central to ensuring the country’s economic sovereignty, the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized during the observance of Sovereignty Day. The ministry underlined the importance of food security, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability in reinforcing the nation’s independence.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, agriculture has made significant strides in boosting productivity and efficiency through reforms implemented by the government. He pointed to successful initiatives like the cultivation of wheat and other highland crops in lowland areas during the rainy season as transformative measures in agricultural practice.



Fikru stressed that food security goes beyond self-sufficiency, focusing on the availability of affordable and nutritious food for the population. He also highlighted the importance of balancing agricultural productivity with ecological sustainability to ensure long-term economic sovereignty. Expanding domestic production and adding value to locally grown goods are seen as key strategies to reduce reliance on imports and boost exports, further strengthening Ethiopia’s economic independence.
