Vihiga: Vihiga county, in partnership with Remmington Africa, hosted an agricultural exposition at Shaviringa grounds today, across all the six sub-counties to create awareness and educate farmers on how to practice productive agriculture and agri-business. The County government, through the Sub County Crop Officers, livestock officers, and Ward Agricultural officers mobilized 1,500 farmers towards the event with the main aim of educating them on how to practice Agro-Ecology Policy.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Agro-Ecology Policy focuses on educating farmers on practicing agriculture while conserving the environment by using green energy. The exposition was meant to boost the agriculturally based economy and provide exposure to stakeholders and shareholders in agri-business. Tony Anduvate, the County Crops Officer and coordinator of the Food Agricultural Organization, highlighted the importance of the exhibitions for local farmers, expressing optimism that farmers would implement what they learned to enhance production and engage in agri-business to boost the county's economy.
Amos Maina, the Project Officer working with Practical Action Project, stated that the project supports agriculture among the youth using digital technology while improving soil quality. Farmers and participants like Winnie Chepkemoi from Kevogi expressed satisfaction, noting that their expectations were met through the sessions attended. The Chairperson of the Watershed Management Committee reported gaining knowledge on value addition and practicing smart irrigation using solar energy.
Dr. Betty Mulianga, the Chief Officer of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, emphasized that the exposition, in partnership with other stakeholders, is crucial in creating awareness and boosting agri-business in Vihiga county. Youths like Oliver Aswani and Mildred Sayo, engaged with Practical Action Project, encouraged their peers to venture into agriculture, highlighting the potential to learn and earn, thus improving livelihoods.
