Afro-Descendants Embrace Burkinabe Culture Through Traditional Cuisine

Ouagadougou: During a tasting evening in Ouagadougou, Afro-descendants visiting Burkina Faso savored a variety of Burkinabe dishes on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Hermann Toe, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad, welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the cultural significance of the event. "By enjoying this evening, you are sharing much more than a meal: you are sharing our culture, you are tasting our hospitality and you are experiencing African brotherhood in its most authentic form," Toe stated.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Hermann Toe highlighted the deep connections between the dishes and the stories, memories, and ancestral knowledge they represent. He suggested that the local cuisine reflects the creativity, resilience, and identity of the Burkinabe people. Toe also expressed the symbolic importance of the evening, stating that the gathering represented a renewed link between Burkina Faso and the global African diaspora.

Toe further elaborated on the significance of the event, noting that the presence of the Afro-descendants heralds a new era of cooperation, investment, cultural exchange, and committed pan-African solidarity. He expressed hope that this connection would contribute to the transformation of Burkina Faso and the entire continent. Burkina Faso, he said, is honored to serve as the bridge between the continent and its diaspora, fostering reconciliation, restored dignity, and shared sovereignty.

Arikana Chihombori, president of the Institute for the Development of the African Diaspora (ADDI), shared her positive experience at the event, stating, "I enjoyed all the dishes I was served. I even finished my plate." Meanwhile, Funwi Ayuninjam, another attendee, appreciated the dishes made with leaves, noting they reminded him of the flavors of Cameroon. He remarked on his enjoyment of Burkinabe cuisine compared to other countries he had visited, including Benin, Ghana, and Senegal.
