Luanda: More than five thousand jobs, both direct and indirect, have been created in Angola by the North American mobile phone operator Africell since it began its operations in the southern African country in April 2022. The information was confirmed on Friday in Luanda by Africell’s Board Chairman, Jorge Vasquez, during a ceremony marking the company’s 25th anniversary in Africa.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Vasquez highlighted that Africell has invested USD 300 million in Angola and currently operates in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huila, and Cuanza Sul, with plans to expand to Malanje by the end of the year. He emphasized the company’s commitment to participating in Angola’s digital transformation process, as well as in Africa more broadly.
Africell’s executive director, Ziad Dalloul, detailed that the investment has facilitated the installation of 800 aerials and the construction of 400 kilometers of optical fiber, among other technological initiatives. Dalloul noted Angola’s emerging
role as an example in building a 5G network and providing innovative services, despite being the latest country to join the Africell group. He also assured that the company is focused on enhancing its services in Angola through the use of Artificial Intelligence.
James Story, the chargé d’affaires of the USA embassy in Angola, commended Africell’s investment in the telecom infrastructure sector in Angola, describing it as an ongoing initiative. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the Angolan minister of Industry and Trade, Rui Miguês.
Africell currently serves approximately five million clients in Angola, which also hosts two other mobile phone companies, Unitel and Movicel.
