African Cinema: Adoption of a Declaration to Strengthen Audiovisual Sovereignty

Ouagadougou: The meeting of directors of cinematography from the member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Republic of Guinea concluded Wednesday in Ouagadougou with the adoption of the 'Declaration on Audiovisual Sovereignty' and an action plan for the period 2026-2030.

According to Burkina Information Agency, African film industry stakeholders agreed to strengthen regional cooperation in order to structure the film and audiovisual industries during the 48-hour meeting. The adopted document outlines the establishment of a permanent framework for consultation, the creation of a regional support fund, and the development of a common market for the distribution of works.

The recommendations also address the harmonization of regulatory frameworks, regulation of digital platforms, development of broadcasting infrastructures, and strengthening of professionals' capacities. The Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Pingdwend© Gilbert Ou©draogo, praised the quality of the discussions, stating that the results are particularly encouraging and that these documents constitute a common roadmap for the states.

He emphasized that making African cinema a lever for cultural sovereignty, economic development, and continental integration remains a shared objective. The film directors expressed their commitment to strengthening public policies and promoting ambitious and structural regional cooperation to support the sector.

On behalf of the participants, their representative Essohanam Koutom, Director General of the National Office of Cinema, Video and Photography of Guinea Conakry, noted that the meeting allowed for reflection on the future of their cinematography and laid the foundations for strategic dialogue between States. The participants also expressed gratitude to the Burkinabe authorities for organizing and hosting the meeting.

The next step for the participating states will be the effective implementation of the commitments made.
