Freetown: Youth Cup President Godson Abba Ekadi arrived in Sierra Leone this week. His mission: evaluate host nation readiness for the prestigious 2026 international youth football tournament.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the visit underscores final preparations for the April 2026 event, which will see continental academies compete in Sierra Leone. A central high-level meeting convened at the Ministry of Sports, hosted by Minister Augusta Teima, to align all national stakeholders.
The gathering united senior officials from multiple sectors. Attendees included the Deputy Ministers of Sports, Youth Affairs, and Tourism, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), and the National Sports Authority.
The discussions tackled essential logistics infrastructure, coordination, and youth engagement with a unanimous pledge to ensure a successful tournament.
Minister Teima, alongside Deputy Youth Affairs Minister Patrick Michaelson Gibrilla, expressed full confidence in national preparations. "Sierra Leone stands ready to host Africa's premier football academies tournament," Minister Teima affirmed.
Deputy Tourism Minister Dr. Kadijatu Kamara linked the event to a major national milestone, announcing its inclusion in Sierra Leone's 63rd Independence Anniversary programs. She highlighted significant benefits for sports tourism, national branding, and youth participation.
"Beyond sport, this tournament is a chance to showcase our nation's vibrant culture and hospitality to the continent," Dr. Kamara stated.
President Ekadi commended the cohesive institutional support from Sierra Leonean officials. He framed the Cup as a transformative platform for youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and international visibility.
