Africa Urban Forum to Shape Development Path for Continental Cities


ADDIS ABABA — The upcoming Africa Urban Forum, to be hosted in Addis Ababa from September 4-6, 2024, aims to shape the future development trajectory of African cities within the context of Agenda 2063, announced Urban and Infrastructure Minister Chaltu Sani.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, the forum will serve as a pivotal event for discussing the growth and sustainable development of urban areas across Africa. She highlighted that the forum will not only assess ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable urban development as outlined in Agenda 2063 but also set forth directions for future initiatives. Officials and representatives from various countries and international organizations are expected to attend, reflecting the forum’s comprehensive and collaborative approach.



The minister also noted that the choice of Ethiopia as the host reflects the country’s rapid urbanization and the government’s prioritization of urban development since recent reforms. The African Union Commission selected Ethiopia for its significant urban growth and contributions to continental development.



Key issues related to urban challenges on the continent will be discussed, and recommendations will be made to ensure continued sustainable development. The forum is set to articulate clear roles and responsibilities for stakeholders in urban development and address the critical need for prepared strategies as urban populations continue to expand. Minister Sani stressed the importance of collaboration with relevant bodies to support these goals.



The Africa Urban Forum will convene under the theme ‘Sustainable Urbanization for Africa’s Transformation: Agenda 2063.’
