NAKURU, Kenya – Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba announced that Nakuru County’s Afraha Stadium is poised to host major national sports events, aligning with Governor Kihika’s aspirations for the venue to feature in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. The declaration comes amidst ongoing refurbishments to elevate the stadium to international standards.

According to Kenya News Agency, significant progress has been made in the upgrade of Afraha Stadium, with plans underway to initiate Nakuru as a pivotal location for major sporting events starting this weekend. “Nakuru County will play host to major sports starting this weekend and we promise going forward to make the county a host for major events as requested by Governor Kihika,” he stated.

The Sports CS also mentioned plans to dispatch a team to assess the current condition of Afraha Stadium, suggesting that the scheduling of events could occur “sooner than you imagine,” depending on the findings. Among the immediate highlights, Namwamba revealed that Nakuru would launch part of the Motorsports’ Autocross Series this weekend. Furthermore, the county is set to host the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha during the Easter Weekend, emphasizing the region’s central role in these prestigious events.

The announcements were made during Namwamba’s attendance at the launch of Nakuru’s County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) for 2022 to 2027. Governor Kihika expressed ambitions for the stadium’s completion and its potential inclusion as a venue for AFCON 2027, highlighting the broader goals of infrastructure development and business growth to improve the living standards of Nakuru’s residents.

Significant advancements have been made in the stadium’s refurbishment, including the installation of a tartan track and other major works that align with Sports Kenya’s recommendations for a pitch and running track of international standards. Governor Kihika emphasized the importance of project continuity and efficient use of taxpayers’ money, noting the completion of stalled projects, such as Afraha Stadium and the construction of Keringet high altitude Sports Academy, as key achievements of her administration.

NAROK, Kenya – Narok County Commissioner Reuben Lotiatia announced the recovery of an AK47 firearm by a multi-agency security team. The weapon was found abandoned during ongoing conflicts between clans along the Nkararo-Enoosaen border in Transmara. The announcement came as Lotiatia addressed efforts to crack down on illicit brews in Narok East.

According to Kenya News Agency, the recovery occurred amidst a broader operation aimed at quelling the unrest in the area. During the operation, security forces also arrested three individuals in a Probox car, which was found carrying 14 arrows, four bows, and four studded clubs. The driver of the vehicle, however, managed to flee the scene. The three suspects have been taken into police custody, and efforts to locate the driver are ongoing.

The County Commissioner emphasized the commitment of security officers to restore order and uphold the rule of law in the region. He appealed to residents to cooperate with the security teams and maintain peace, allowing the operations aimed at securing the area to proceed effectively.
