Kabul: Afghan farmers have harvested more than 151,000 tons of figs this year, marking a 35 percent surge year on year, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock announced in a statement late Sunday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, fig orchards spanned over 17,500 hectares of land, yielding 151,745 tons of fruit. The provinces of Zabul, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand, and Herat boast the largest fig orchards and highest production, the statement noted.
Commonly used in traditional medicine among Afghans, the sweet fruit is widely available in homeopathic shops across the country, with a substantial portion exported abroad annually.
