Affordable Housing Project Spurs Development in Molo Schools

Kiambu: Five schools in the Molo constituency have undergone significant improvements following an initiative by a national housing project to construct state-of-the-art facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, and administration units, as part of its Community Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The primary aim of this initiative is to complement the housing project by enhancing local educational infrastructure.

According to Kenya News Agency, the schools benefiting from this development are Michinda Primary, PCEA Elburgon Senior School, Orthodox Primary, New Creation Primary, and Sokoro Primary. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to support and improve academic performance, thereby fostering excellence within these institutions.

During the site handover, government consultant architect Onyango Nicholas emphasized that the project, which comprises 2,680 housing units valued at 4.2 billion, is not solely focused on housing but also on enhancing surrounding social amenities such as schools and hospitals. These improvements are intended to benefit prospective buyers of the housing units upon project completion. Onyango stressed the importance of adhering to the project timeline without compromising quality.

Contractor Oscar Wafula echoed this sentiment, noting that the project will create employment opportunities for over 1,000 youths as jua kali and casual laborers to meet the July 2027 deadline for project completion and handover. The housing units will include 3-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 1-bedroom apartments, along with shops and a kindergarten within the compound. Eng. Wafula mentioned plans to double the workforce by March, with approximately 1,000 laborers active on site at any given time.

Wafula also highlighted that the construction of classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, and administration units for the identified schools is part of a CSR proposal by area Member of Parliament Kimani Kuria. This initiative reflects the contractor's commitment to enhancing community welfare.

Michinda School Principal, Mr. Kamotho Simon, praised the project, noting its potential to transform educational institutions and provide students with opportunities to excel. He expressed gratitude on behalf of parents and principals from the other four schools, acknowledging the priority given to the education sector by the government and MP Kuria Kimani.

Affordable housing CSR projects in Kenya are primarily driven by public-private partnerships and corporate investments aimed at reducing the housing deficit and improving living standards. Key initiatives include the government's Boma Yangu programme, which offers units starting from Sh640,000, alongside various corporate-backed projects.

The development of various towns across the country is expected to curb rural-urban migration to major cities and promote uniform economic growth across the 290 constituencies, ensuring residents benefit from current government initiatives.
