AFEMIB Advances Safe and Sustainable Practices in Burkina Faso’s Gold Mining Sector

BOUDRY, Ganzourgou — The Association of Women in the Mining Sector of Burkina (AFEMIB), backed by the Support Project for Strengthening Land and Mines Management (PARGFM), conducted an awareness day on June 11, 2024, at the Kagtanga site to promote secure and environmentally sustainable mining practices among women.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the initiative on the eve of Women’s Day in the mining sector emphasized safe working methods, environmental management, and formalization in the sector. The representative expressed appreciation for AFEMIB’s efforts that extended beyond mining to include vocational training, such as soap making, benefiting local families.

The event highlighted the risks associated with using mercury in gold panning and the importance of keeping children away from mining sites. Ms. Annonciata Thiombiano, Secretary General of AFEMIB, acknowledged the critical support from PARGFM and other stakeholders like the Directorate of Artisanal and Semi-Mechanized Farms (DEMAS) and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). Speakers from DEMAS discussed the challenges in artisanal mining, including conflicts and regulatory issues, with more than 800 artisanal sites currently active in Burkina Faso.

The president of the local AFEMIB branch in Boudry, Ms. Marie Dipama, commended the training and financial support provided to women, enabling them to engage in activities beyond mining. Participants, including Juliette Ouédraogo, expressed the hardships of gold panning and voiced a need for continued support and the formation of cooperatives to ensure stable incomes.
