Addis Ababa’s Transformation Captures the Hearts of International Tourists

ADDIS ABABA — Addis Ababa is rapidly transforming into a vibrant tourist destination, captivating visitors with its extensive urban renewal and infrastructure improvements. This burgeoning interest in Ethiopia’s capital was highlighted in recent feedback from international tourists speaking to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Addis Ababa has undergone significant changes over the past decade, evolving from a city with a rural vibe and limited infrastructure into a burgeoning hub of modernity and mobility. Spanish paleontologist Ignacio Lasagabaster, who visited the city a decade ago, noted substantial advancements in areas undergoing corridor development, enhancing the city’s infrastructure and overall appeal.

Tanzanian paleontologist Mariam Bundala also reflected on her observations of Addis Ababa since her first visit seven years ago, suggesting that Addis Ababa’s urban development could serve as a model for similar projects in Tanzania. “The city’s appearance has changed significantly,” Bundala stated, underscoring the impact of ongoing urban development efforts.

Founded in 1887 during the reign of Emperor Menelik II, Addis Ababa is not only the political capital of Ethiopia but also a crucial center of African diplomacy, often dubbed the “capital of Africa.” Despite its historical significance, the city struggled with urban planning issues such as compact settlements, narrow streets, and inadequate infrastructure, which posed challenges for residents and visitors alike.

Efforts to revitalize Addis Ababa have included a comprehensive corridor development program aimed at transforming the city into a well-planned metropolis with orderly housing, expansive roads, modern infrastructure, and an improved sewage disposal system. These initiatives have started to reshape the city, giving it a more modern profile and making it more visually appealing.

Visitors who have witnessed the city’s evolution firsthand have expressed their admiration for the changes, noting that Addis Ababa is increasingly being recognized for its beauty and significantly enhanced urban environment.
