ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa University (AAU) marked a significant milestone today at Millennium Hall, graduating 5,574 students, with a record number of postgraduates that underscores the institution’s shift towards advanced research.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, who opened the ceremony, the university graduated 2,837 postgraduate students, indicating a significant transition towards becoming a research-focused university. This move aligns with AAU’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic offerings and infrastructure, which includes 10 colleges, 2 technology institutes, 11 research institutions, and 17 campuses. Furthermore, the gender balance was highlighted with 51 percent of the undergraduate graduates being female, showcasing AAU’s commitment to promoting gender equality in higher education.
During the event, AAU Chancellor and Education Minister Professor Birhanu Nega addressed the graduates, urging them to be aware of the global and local challenges ahead. He emphasized the role of educational institutions in fostering a commitment to truth-seeking and knowledge-based learning. Additionally, Professor Nega encouraged the new alumni to uphold ethical standards and contribute to national unity in their future endeavors.
The graduation also coincides with AAU’s progression towards becoming an autonomous and self-administered institution, a shift that reflects the broader educational reforms in Ethiopia. These reforms include a new one-year freshman program and the implementation of a rigorous leaving examination aimed at improving learning outcomes across the board.
