Addis Ababa Reports on Regional Development Initiatives

Addis Ababa – the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, highlighted the pivotal role of a newly formed council of eminent persons and elders in addressing the region’s challenges. The council was officially introduced during an induction and orientation meeting, attended by notable figures from each IGAD member state. This group is tasked with advising on key areas of IGAD cooperation, such as peace, development, trade, regional integration, and climate change.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the council aims to enhance efforts in peace and security, environmental protection, and management of cross-border migration. Workneh Gebeyehu called on the council members to actively advocate for those affected by regional conflicts. He confirmed that the leaders of IGAD member states fully back the council’s formation and objectives. Additionally, Ethiopia’s Minister of Justice, Gedion Timothewos, praised the initiative, emphasizing the council’s crucial role in fostering peace, prosperity, and regional integration. Members of the council expressed their dedication to collaborating with IGAD and local stakeholders to devise solutions rooted in African traditions and values for the complex issues facing the region.
