ADDIS ABABA – Mayor Adanech Abiebie of Addis Ababa today lauded the Green Legacy Initiative as a profound legacy for both the present and future generations. Her remarks came during her participation in the single-day campaign to plant 600 million tree saplings at the ICT Park in the capital, an event that saw wide participation from city residents, diplomats, and various community groups.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Mayor Adanech noted that the initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change and address food insecurity challenges. On this occasion, she emphasized the transformative impact of the Green Legacy Initiative on Addis Ababa’s landscape, citing the significant increase in forest coverage from 2.8 percent to 20 percent since the initiative’s inception. “Green Legacy Initiative is finally bringing about fundamental changes for the country’s prosperity, combating climate change and ensuring food security,” she stated, affirming the initiative’s importance for future sustainability and environmental health.
