Addis Ababa: Availability and Diversity of Forages Key to Livestock Productivity, Says ILRI

ADDIS ABABA: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) emphasized the importance of forage availability and diversity for livestock productivity. This was highlighted during the 40th Anniversary of ILRI’s Forage Genebank, dedicated to conserving global forage genetic resources.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Forage Genebank has played a pivotal role in the livestock sector over the past 40 years. The institute focuses on increasing development and utilization of the sector through research on animal species. With more than 18,000 accessions from nearly 2,000 forage species, the Genebank provides essential feed solutions across Ethiopia and the continent. Djikeng noted that forage diversity research is central to ILRI’s Feed and Forage Development program, addressing challenges like insufficient and variable feed supplies and climate-related impacts. Abera Siyoum, Forest and Range Land Plants Biodiversity Research Lead Executive Officer at the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI), acknowledged ILRI’s contribution in repatriating Ethiopian genetic resources and providing research facilities focused on forage species. Over the past 40 years, more than 20 improved breeds of animal fodder have been identified and delivered to research institutions and consumers.
