ADB Funds Coastal Resilience Project in Maharashtra, India

MUMBAI—The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted a $42 million loan to bolster coastal and riverbank protection in Maharashtra, aiming to enhance the resilience of both local communities and natural ecosystems against climate impacts.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiative, known as the Maharashtra Sustainable Climate-Resilient Coast Protection and Management Project, will implement various protective measures. These include the construction of offshore reefs, installation of sheet piles, beach nourishment, and vegetation planting to stabilize and restore the coastline.

The ADB will also assist in strengthening the capabilities of the Maharashtra Maritime Board by setting up a coastal infrastructure management unit focused on shore management planning. Furthermore, the project is designed to enhance stakeholder capacities in crucial areas such as gender equality, social inclusion, coastal management, and livelihood activities.

This funding initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable development and disaster risk management in one of India's most populous states, aiming to safeguard both its environment and its inhabitants from the adverse effects of climate change.
