Okakarara: A fierce battle is expected at the Okakarara VTC and Okakarara Secondary School sports fields this weekend as football teams from across the country lock horns at the inaugural Potilo Cup. The knockout competition, which kicks off on Saturday, has attracted more than 20 football clubs vying for a total prize of N.dollars 30 000. According to Namibia Press Agency, Charles Kamundu, the chief organiser for the Potilo Cup, stated that the primary objective of the event is to revitalise football within Okakarara and keep the youth engaged during the country's 36th Independence celebrations. 'We have noticed a drastic decline in the football activities in our constituency and we hope the tournament will change the current state,' he said, adding that it will also give lower divisions teams the opportunity to scout for talent. The competition features a formidable lineup of contenders, including Ajax Mamboro Football Club from Okahitua, Qwasa Qwasa FC, Oukuvas's Liverpool FC, Karibib's Wild-Dogs, and th e Chillie Boys from Grootfontein. Kamundu noted that the presence of these established teams promises a high standard of play for the spectators. 'These are well-known teams, they are expected to do wonders and produce a good performance. Teams like Clever Boys of Okakarara and Otjiwarongo's Swansea are some of the big names featuring in the Potilo Cup,' he said. Regarding the prize breakdown, Kamundu confirmed that the winning team will pocket N.dollars 13 000 in cash, a trophy, and 20 gold medals. The runners-up are set to take home N.dollars 8 000 and 20 silver medals, while the teams exiting in the penultimate stage will also be compensated. 'Each semi-finalist will walk away with N.dollars 4 500,' he said. In addition to the team accolades, the organisers have introduced special individual prizes. Trophies will be awarded to the best player, goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and the tournament's top goal scorer. There is also a specific focus on youth development and sportsmanship within the awards str ucture. 'We are also going to motivate young players in the competition by awarding the youngest player of the tournament with a trophy,' Kamundu said, adding that the most disciplined player team will also take home a trophy. The official draw for the competition is scheduled for Friday. Matches are expected to commence at 07h00 on Saturday, culminating in the finals on Sunday afternoon. Entry for spectators is set at N.dollars 20.
