This oral statement by Amnesty International to the 52st session of the UN Human Rights Council offers the organization’s perspectives ahead of the start of the UPR’s 4th cycle on the value of the mechanism for achieving progress; the importance of civil society engagement, the need to strengthen national mechanisms for reporting and follow up and for additional support to states for the implementation of recommendations. It also draws attention to new guidance developed with UNESCO for civil society, to encourage a greater focus on freedom of expression in their UPR engagement.
