Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has launched the highly anticipated 3rd edition of the Mountain to Mountain Ultra Marathon, which is set to be held in Nyeri County this month.
The marathon is set to raise awareness about climate change mitigation and tourism in Nyeri County.
Nyeri County Government, Urban Swaras Running Club and the Mt. Kenya Blazers are jointly organising this marathon, which will raise awareness on the need for people to embrace physical activity to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that have become burdensome to our citizenry.
Kahiga said Sustainable Development Goal 13 serves as a reminder to every person of the need to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
He said the Mountain to Mountain ultra-marathon themed ‘Feel the Power of the Mountains Under Your Feet’ will take place on September 23, 2023.
Governor Kahiga said the ultra-marathon will cover 80 kilometres from the majestic Mt. Kenya to the beautiful Aberdare ranges, adding that this would also be an excellent opportunity to market Nyeri and all its splendour, from the beautiful scenery to the integration between human settlement and wildlife, cementing the credibility of Nyeri County as a unique tourist destination.
He reiterated his government’s total support for making this event a success and thanked all sponsors who have come forward to join in this sporting event.
He added that this is Urban Swara’s flagship project and it would have distances of 25km, 50km and 80 km. The Urban Swaras Running Club encompasses beginners to semi-elite runners hoping to polish their craft and improve their timing.
