34-Year-Old Man Arrested in Waterberg for Alleged Murder of Girlfriend in Eastern Cape

Polokwane—A 34-year-old male suspect has been arrested by members of the Mokopane Crime Intelligence and Mahwelereng Detectives for the alleged murder of his girlfriend. The arrest took place on Monday, 23 October 2023, in the Mahwelereng policing area under Waterberg District.

According to a new release by South African Police Service, the man is suspected of assaulting his girlfriend in Cradock, Eastern Cape Province, earlier this month and then fleeing the province. The victim was initially admitted to a hospital but later died from the injuries sustained during the altercation.

Acting on received information about the suspect's whereabouts in Mapela, Sundsloot village, the police immediately operationalized the tip and successfully located the suspect at his parental residence. He was then arrested for the alleged murder.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Cradock Magistrate Court soon, where he will face murder charges.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, expressed appreciation for the arrest, particularly given that the suspect had fled from Eastern Cape Province. Lt Gen Hadebe emphasized that Limpopo is not a refuge for criminals, and pledged that the police will continue their rigorous investigations.
