Gageo island: Two people lost their lives and three others remain missing following the capsizing of a Chinese fishing boat near Gageo Island, located approximately 420 km southwest of Seoul, South Korea. The incident occurred in international waters, about 81 km from the island, and was reported to authorities at 6:50 a.m. local time (2150 GMT Saturday).
According to Namibia Press Agency, the South Korean coast guard received reports of the 98-ton vessel overturning and rushed to the scene. The Chinese consulate general in Gwangju confirmed the incident. Out of the 11 crew members on board, six were rescued by a nearby Chinese fishing boat. These individuals were found to be in stable condition with no major health concerns.
The coast guard managed to rescue two additional sailors who were in cardiac arrest, but unfortunately, both individuals did not survive. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining three crew members who are still unaccounted for. The search operations are being conducted jointly by the South Korean and Chinese coast guards around the area where the accident occurred.
