27,000 Bungoma Households Set For Power Connection

Bungoma: The government has committed to connect more than 27,000 households to electricity in Bungoma County under the Last Mile Connectivity Programme. Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced this initiative, which has been allocated Sh1.9 billion, during the launch event in Wabukhonyi, Webuye East Constituency.

According to Kenya News Agency, Wandayi highlighted that many residents in Bungoma have lived without electricity for a long time. He emphasized the government's efforts to ensure these areas receive electricity connections. Although the current funds may not suffice for all households, Wandayi assured residents that his ministry would seek additional funding in the next financial year to expand coverage.

In addition, the CS disclosed that Sh6 million has been designated for purchasing and installing a powerful transformer at Bungoma County Referral Hospital. This development is expected to enhance the hospital's ability to operate heavy medical equipment, offering more advanced services and reducing the cost burden for patients needing specialized services.

Wandayi also mentioned plans to upgrade the power substation at Webuye to decrease frequent power outages. Furthermore, a power generation station is being established at Nabuyole Waterfall in Webuye town, which is projected to produce over 40 megawatts of electricity upon completion. This project will create employment opportunities for the youth and significantly stabilize electricity supply in the region.

Meanwhile, Wandayi issued a warning against impersonators of Kenya Power employees involved in transformer and cable theft, stressing that offenders will face legal consequences. He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities to prevent losses through equipment vandalism.

Webuye East Member of Parliament Martin Pepela praised the government's efforts, noting that electricity access will stimulate economic growth, improve security, and create job opportunities, particularly for the youth. Pepela expressed optimism that the new connections would deter criminal activities, which have been exacerbated by poor lighting in the area. He stated that the first phase of the project would benefit over 1,600 households in Webuye East Constituency.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Kimilili Constituency MP Didmus Barasa, Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga, Senator Consolata Wakwabubi, and several county and national government leaders.
