1,317 Migrants Perish on Route to Spain in Five Months

Madrid: 1,317 undocumented migrants lost their lives between January and May 2026 while trying to reach Spain, according to data published by the human rights non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras.

According to Burkina Information Agency, "1,317 people have died at Spain's borders in just five months." The victims came from 26 different countries. The organization states that among the dead are 142 women and 129 minors. "The Atlantic route remains the most dangerous," it added.

According to figures previously released by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, more than 10,200 irregular migrants managed to enter Spain between January 1 and May 31, 2026, a decrease of 35.2% compared to the same period in 2025.
