13 Killed in Weekend Road Accidents Across Angola

LUANDA: At least 13 individuals lost their lives and 102 sustained injuries in a series of 63 road accidents over the weekend in Angola, according to a statement made by Superintendent Joo de Sousa, the spokesman for the National Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, on Monday. The data indicates a reduction in fatalities and injuries compared to the previous weekend, with nine fewer deaths, 44 fewer injuries, and 33 fewer accidents recorded.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the distribution of accidents was consistent across the weekend, with 21 incidents reported on each day, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The highest number of fatalities occurred on Saturday with six deaths, while Sunday saw the greatest number of injuries with 49 reported cases.

The capital city of Luanda experienced the highest concentration of accidents, totaling 17, consistent with the previous period. These incidents resulted in five deaths and an increase of 25 injuries, bringing the total to 43. The province of U­ge reported 10 accidents, an increment of five from the prior weekend, with a corresponding increase of three deaths and seven additional injuries, totaling three fatalities and 13 injuries. Meanwhile, Cabinda province witnessed seven accidents, resulting in eight injuries, which is five more than the previous weekend’s figures.

“During this period, we imposed 450 fines for violations of the Highway Code and complementary legislation, while 101 cars and 248 motorcycles were impounded,” Superintendent de Sousa added, highlighting the enforcement measures taken in response to the incidents.
