Johannesburg: At least 12 people were killed and 45 others injured after a bus overturned in South Africa's northeastern Gauteng Province on Tuesday morning. The tragic incident took place near Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Andile Mngwevu, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in Ekurhuleni City, stated that the accident occurred on a highway in Ekurhuleni City at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time (0445 GMT). Mngwevu confirmed that 12 individuals died at the scene, while the injured passengers were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
Mngwevu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and offered prayers for a speedy recovery to those hospitalized. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident, and it remains unclear whether other vehicles were involved.
Ekurhuleni City Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini provided additional details to Xinhua, stating that the bus was traveling from Katlehong to Kempton Park at the time of the incident. Dlamini mentioned that officials are still at the scene, working on removing the bodies and clearing the area.
