Gifu: Okagi Hayashi, a 115-year-old resident of central Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, has been recognized as the country’s oldest person. This announcement follows the recent passing of the previous record holder, as confirmed by the government on Monday.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Hayashi, born on September 2, 1909, assumed the title of Japan’s oldest living person after Tomiko Itooka passed away at the age of 116. Itooka, who was residing in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, reportedly died of old age on December 29. At the time of her passing, Itooka was acknowledged as the world’s oldest person.
