The incident occurred on Monday night when the boats, each carrying 16 passengers and crew, collided in the middle of the lagoon at Imore, a locality within the Amuwo-Odofin local government area. According to Namibia Press Agency, Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesman in Lagos, shared details with the media on Tuesday regarding the unfortunate accident. He reported that the victims were primarily traders traveling across the lagoon. Following the collision, emergency response teams, including conventional and marine units of the police along with local divers, were quickly dispatched to the site of the accident. They managed to rescue 11 injured passengers, who were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Hundeyin also confirmed that the search and rescue o peration for the other missing passengers was ongoing and that an investigation into the causes of the accident had been initiated. He highlighted that boat accidents are a frequent occurrence in Nigeria, often caused by factors such as overloading, adverse weather conditions, and operational mishaps.
