Security Forces Thwart Bandit Attack in Marsabit, Three Killed

MARSABIT, Kenya – In a dramatic confrontation, three suspected bandits were killed by security personnel during a foiled attack in the Leyal-Badassa area of Marsabit Central sub-county. The incident, which involved at least 15 heavily armed individuals, occurred following a tip-off that alerted the authorities to the potential threat.

According to Kenya News Agency, the security officers, acting on intelligence, engaged the raiders in a fierce gun battle. The swift response by the officers was critical in preventing the planned assault. A G3 rifle and a magazine loaded with two bullets were recovered from the scene, highlighting the gravity of the encounter.

The skirmish, which saw police officers from the Quick Response Unit (QRU) initially confront the gunmen, lasted approximately one hour. Support from the General Service Unit (GSU), National Police Service, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) was quickly mobilized, leading to the overpowering of the attackers. The remaining bandits retreated into the dense Marsabit forest, sparking an ongoing manhunt to apprehend the 12 suspects believed to still be at large.

Mwakio indicated that the suspects, armed with assault rifles and yet to be identified, were likely on a cattle rustling mission. The intense exchange of fire with the police suggests that some of the fleeing bandits may have sustained injuries. Local medical facilities have been alerted to be vigilant for individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

The police commander praised the security personnel for their professionalism, noting that all officers were accounted for without any injuries. The operation also led to the seizure of two mobile phones, clothing, a solar panel, water jerricans, and foodstuffs, providing further evidence of the bandits’ intentions.

Mwakio extended gratitude to the public for their role in providing the tip-off that prevented the attack. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the community and law enforcement agencies in combating banditry and assured the public of the government’s commitment to their safety and security.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been taken to Marsabit County Referral Hospital’s mortuary as efforts to identify them and track down the remaining fugitives continue.
