Zimbabwe: Mugabe Unimpressed With Likely Successors

A BITTER fight to replace the ageing President Robert Mugabe has divided Zanu PF and is said to pit Vice President Joice Mujuru and Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe has cunningly refused to give any hint of his preference between the two heavyweights, instead playing the rivalries to his advantage.

But speaking in an interview with the ZBC to mark his 90th birthday, Mugabe vented his frustration with divisions in the party over the succession question.

Significantly too, the Zanu PF leader appeared unimpressed with leading contenders.

ON SUCCESSORS

The Zanu PF leader ruled out retiring anytime soon and told his ambitious lieutenants to stop wasting time squabbling over his succession.

He said: “But why should it (succession) be discussed when it is not due? Is it due? The leadership still exists that runs the country. In other words, I am still there.”
