The EU has been trying to secure a trade agreement with the Mercosur member states for more than 17 years. This may finally be achieved in December, but there are still a number of areas where the parties have yet to reach agreement. If the agreement is signed, it would open up markets for the EU in a region that is home to more than 220 million people and where exports of machinery and other technical equipment would be the main draw. Concerns persist, however, over increased beef imports posing a threat to production in France or Ireland, for example.
