The new defence plan marks the beginning of the full militarisation of the EU. It calls for investment in defence and security to make the EU a stronger partner in the military sector. It suggests the establishment of permanent military structures, as well as a European Defence Fund with a budget of EUR 38.5 billion from 2020 until 2027, i.e. EUR 5.5 billion a year, for the purchase of military equipment, the strengthening of the defence industry and the promotion of research for military purposes.
If such a large budget is available, why is it not used to promote the re-industrialisation of the EU and re-establish social development, especially in the South, which has been most affected by the economic crisis and neoliberal austerity policies?
Why is this budget not put towards a comprehensive strategy for industry, thus creating new jobs and promoting social development?
