Media launch for 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children 2020
The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) will host a media briefing on 24 November 2020 to launch the 2020 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign. The media briefing will also provide the opportunity for the IMC on GBVF to provide an update on progress made in implementing the National Strategic Plan (NSP).
The 16 Days Campaign is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). The launch of 16 Days of Activism takes place during Disability Rights Awareness Month.
Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane as the Chairperson of the IMC will lead the IMC in addressing the media. The theme for the 16 days Campaign 2020 is “Women’s Economic Justice for a Non-Violent and Non-Sexist South Africa”.
The NSP on GBVF was approved by Cabinet in March 2020 and presented to the President. The IMC consists of the Ministers of Justice and Correctional Services, Social Development, Police, Public Service and Administration and National Treasury.
This NSP has 6 pillars which are:
1. Accountability, Leadership and Coordination
2. Prevention and Restoration of Social Fabric
3. Protection, Safety and Justice,
4. Response, Care, Support and Healing
5. Economic Empowerment
6. Research and Information Systems
A great deal of work and progress in the implementation of several interventions has been made since the launch of the NSP and the release of the Emergency Response Action Plan (ERAP) amidst the covid-19 pandemic.
The briefing will also give an update on the 5 electric vehicles that were donated by BMW for the GBVF Council and for further disbursement to civil society organisations (CSOs). This is in the pursuit of GBVF interventions across all service delivery levels, in line with the 6 pillars of the NSP. The vehicles will be handed to CSOs at the media launch.
The details for the commemoration of the 16 Days Campaign 2020 as well as the 5 Days of Remembrance Campaign will also be announced as part of the media briefing.
