A South West residential street was lit with multiple explosions after power cables came down as gale-force winds struck the region last night.

Warning: The video above contains some bad language.

At around 3am, the power lines began arcing spectacularly in Bodriggy Street in Hayle, Cornwall.

Blake Evans awoke to the intense smell of burning and the bright flashing and crash of explosions just outside his bedroom window.

He said: “There were explosions and sparks which awoke everyone in the area. No one was hurt as far as I know. The cable was touching at least two cars and the was power out, obviously. Everything smelled of burning and the noise was honestly like multiple fireworks, just inches from our bedroom window.”

He was able to catch the dramatic moment on video from his mobile phone.

He added: “I was filling buckets and pots and pans with water just in case – the smell of burning was everywhere, so we were panicking for about 30 minutes. It is hard to describe just how scary and loud it was.”

Hayle firefighters and engineers from Western Power Distribution were quickly on scene to make the street safe.

Gusts of up to 50mph were recorded across South West last night.
