ADDIS ABABA, The visiting United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has held talks here with the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Minata Samate Cessouma, at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa on issues of common concern.
They discussed a range of topics relating to Africa, including the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the situations in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mali.
During the meeting Monday, Haley expressed her country’s appreciation for AU’s partnership in UN peacekeeping operations in Africa. The two officials noted the need to increase the role of women in peacekeeping operations.
The partnership between the AU and the United States and the United Nations is indispensable, Haley affirmed.
She also underscored the leading role the AU could play in stabilizing the region and in advancing peace, security, and human rights across the continent.
