Final phase of measles vaccination campaign underway in Sudan
The last phase of a measles vaccination campaign is underway in Sudan following a deadly outbreak of the virus nearly a year ago. More than 3,400 children have been infected with measles across its large land mass, since December 2014. More than 70 of those children have died. In response, the UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) has launched a massive vaccination campaign, aiming to reach all 16.5 million children in Sudan, below the age of 15. Veronica Reeves spoke with Geert Cappel-aere, the UNICEF Representative in the country about the effort.
Targeted youth killings represent “killing the future of Burundi”
Killing Burundi’s children is tantamount to “killing the future” of the central African country, a senior UN representative on genocide issues has warned. Adama Dieng, the UN Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide, told the Security Council that the potential for atrocity crimes and genocide, similar to Rwanda in 1994, was growing. The UN Children’s Fund has warned that child rights violations have multiplied since violent unrest began in April, and 17 children are among the more than 200 dead. Alarmed by the country’s descent and the spectre of another Tutsi-Hutu genocide, the Security Council passed a resolution last week demanding talks, and leaving the door open for further UN action. Matthew Wells asked Mr Dieng what he thought of the latest situation in Burundi.
Climate change, poverty and terrorism all taking grave toll on the Sahel
The combined effects of climate change, poverty and terrorism are taking a heavy toll on the Sahel region. That’s according to the UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the region, Toby Lanzer, who has been traveling throughout the nine countries in west and central Africa that make up the Sahel. Some 25 million people there are said to be food insecure, with 5 million of those, severely. As a result, some 700,000 children could die each year in the Sahel due to malnutrition alone. Veronica Reeves has more.
