Air aid service to Darfur faces closure “within weeks”

Lifesaving airborne aid deliveries to remote communities in Sudan may have to stop at the end of the month as a funding shortfall starts to bite, the World Food Programme (WFP) has said. In an appeal for nearly US$10 million to keep the UN Humanitarian  Air Service (UNHAS) flying in the gigantic sub-Saharan country, WFP said that needs are greater than ever after recent fighting displaced an estimated 200,000 people. WFP’s Bettina Luescher told Daniel Johnson why it’s so important that the air service continues to operate.

Mr Campbell has been in Durban, South Africa for the World Forestry Congress, meeting under the theme “Forests and People: Investing in a Sustainable Future”. Ana Carmo began by asking him how important is it to have an African country host the event for the first time.

Scaling up insurance for resilience in Africa

Increasing the availability or scaling up insurance across the continent can boost the resilience of vulnerable communities, according to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). The UN is highlighting how providing insurance is one of the ways through which the public and private sectors can help prevent low-income communities from sinking deeper into poverty when faced with disasters such as erratic rainfall or drought. Stephanie Coutrix spoke on the line with Marc Gordon from UNISDR’s Europe office in Switzerland. She began by asking him what is meant by “scaling up insurance”.
