Uasin Gishu County Keen On Featuring In Kenya-Mozambique Sports Pact

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has declared its willingness to support an upcoming sports partnership between Kenya and Mozambique.

The two countries are currently working on an agreement that seeks to make a formal policy on the exchange of ideas and expertise on sports and sports tourism.

On his visit to Uasin Gishu on Saturday, the Republic of Mozambique High Commissioner to Kenya, Jeromino Chivavi, disclosed that Kenya and his country were exploring possibilities of a sports partnership.

The areas of partnership include harnessing sports to bolster both the economy and spur tourism and mitigate on effects of climate change.

“Kenya does very well in sports, this is why Mozambique is considering an agreement of sharing of ideas for both countries to help one another to develop this sector further,” said the envoy.

County Executive for Environment Abraham Serem, while hosting the ambassador, said the County was willing to be incorporated into the partnership. Chief of Staff and the county Sports Chief Officer, Nahum Jelagat expressed similar sentiments.

Serem, while explaining the sports prowess that Uasin Gishu relishes, said besides sports participants, there was immense technical potential in coaching, citing Paul Bittok who is a resident of the county who has coached the Rwandan national volleyball team, and is currently the head coach of the national team, Malkia Strikers.

Uasin Gishu is home to 95 percent of Kenya’s world-beating athletes, with Eldoret basking in the global limelight as having the highest concentration of medals from athletics.

The envoy visited and mingled with athletes at Kaptagat’s Nike Athletics Camp and then the Lobbo Village in Kapseret, which recently hosted Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour.
