Tunisia is unwaveringly committed to respecting the rights of migrants and preserving their dignity, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar said.
He also reiterated the call for increased solidarity in addressing illegal migration as he met Tuesday with Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) António Vitorino as part of a working visit to Geneva, Switzerland.
There is need for stepped-up global action, Ammar said, to tackle root causes of illegal migration. “This in addition to fighting human trafficking and smuggling networks,” he was quoted as saying in a Foreign Ministry press release on Tuesday night.
Tunisia has incessantly called for a holistic approach to migration, one which is premised on the observance of human rights while taking into account the dimensions of security, development and social justice.
Ways to scale up cooperation with the organisation also took centre stage. Vitorino said his organisation is ready to support Tunisia within the sope of its action.
In a recent meeting with ambassadors of some African countries, the FM placed emphasis on Tunisia’s commitment to protect foreign residents and tackle illegal migration in full compliance with the legislation in force as well as international and African conventions.
The meeting came against the backdrop of remarks by the President of the Republic on the situation of some undocumented African nationals in Tunisia.
