Tragedy Strikes in Makueni: One Drowned, Two Rescued in Floodwaters
MAKUENI: A tragic incident occurred in Mukaa, Makueni County, where a man lost his life and two others were rescued after their vehicle was swept away by the raging waters of River Muatineni. The incident took place on the Sultan Hamud-Kasikeu road amid heavy rainfall that has recently affected the area.
According to Kenya News Agency, Acting County Commissioner Moses Gicharu confirmed the death of John Mbelezi from Kitindini village, whose body was recovered and taken to Kilungu Sub-county hospital for preservation. The Makueni County Red Cross Coordinator, Evans Peter, reported on the retrieval of the body.
Two survivors, a 30-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were rescued by the County Emergency Response team and are currently being treated for shock at Sultan Hamud Sub County Hospital. Gicharu urged residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers and to seek alternative routes, emphasizing the unpredictability of water levels.
The unfortunate event has brought attention to the dangers of crossing floodwaters, with Gicharu warning against underestimating the magnitude of such waters. The administration is also dealing with the aftermath of two other individuals swept away by River Kavuti, whose bodies are yet to be retrieved. Gicharu appealed for police assistance with police dogs to help recover the bodies once water levels subside.
