RUNDU: Three children died unnatural deaths when they were allegedly struck by lightning on Friday at the Cakai village along the Okavango River.
The children were in a hut at the Cakai village, south west of Rundu when lightning struck at about 15h00.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) responsible for the Kavango Region said in a report availed to Nampa today said that the trio died on the spot.
They have been identified as Muronga Thomas Kudumo, 8, Sikongo Marceline Kasiku, 4, and 14-year-old Fabianus Benonia Naimbodi.
Their next of kin have been informed by the police.
Meanwhile, one child died while swimming in the Okavango River on Friday at the Sauyemwa informal settlement on the outskirts of Rundu.
Karas Regional Governor Bernardus Swartbooi and girlfriend Moedie Jacobs got engaged here yesterday.
Approximately 700 people from Otjiwarongo, Windhoek, Keetmanshop and elsewhere flocked to Somaeb Street in the Orwetoveni residential area, where Jacobs’s mother, Magdalena Sabatha, lives.
Guests were treated to food and drink, and music, especially the Nama Stap.
Swartbooi, 35, was accompanied by his mother Katrina and father Frederick Swartbooi, and was smiling for the entire engagement ceremony, seated next to his girlfriend of eight years.
Jacobs, 32, was born in Otjiwarongo, and works in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in Windhoek.
According to Sabatha, the couple will tie the knot on 15 December 2012 in Otjiwarongo.
