SWAKOPMUND: Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Richard Kamwi says there is an urgent need to build capacity in the fields of epidemiology and public health laboratory management.
Kamwi made this statement during the opening of a one-day Scientific Conference and three-week Second Short Course on Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (FELTP) here yesterday.
Epidemiology deals with the incidence, distribution, and control of disease in a population.
The minister indicated that Namibia has faced and responded to various outbreaks such as the H1N1 virus (swine flu) and measles, and more recently the Health Ministry has responded to reported outbreaks of anthrax and measles in the Oshikoto Region.
Kamwi stated that these are all indicators informing Namibia to keep abreast of modern technologies in order to respond promptly, which can only be done through capacity-building.
The training therefore forms part of the ministry’s preparations to control epidemics, he said.
