ONGWEDIVA: The Omusati regional Swapo-Party conference re-held on Saturday at Outapi Town as per instruction of the party’s secretariat, has re-elected Irginus Endjala to be the region’s new coordinator for the next five years.
A source that also attended conference, but decided to remain anonymous, told this news agency that Endjala this time around handed the acting coordinator, Rebbeka Itembu, a heavier defeat of 51 votes.
Itembu is said to have received 39 votes, while the Oshikuku district coordinator Eunice Nambala, who also vied for the regional coordinator position, received only two votes.

During the previous regional conference held at the end of last month, Endjala beat Itembu in the second round with a small margin votes of 46 to 45, following a 42-all draw in the first round.
Leevi Katoma, the former councillor of Tsandi Constituency and now Personal Assistant to the Oshikoto regional governor Penda Ya Ndakolo, was also re-elected as the Swapo-Party mobiliser and information officer for the Omusati Region.

A well-known local businessman, Tobias “Tona” Amadhila, who is also the husband of Finance Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, could not be re-elected as the party’s regional treasurer. The source pointed out that a less known Swapo-Party politician, Jacob Mwiyale, this time around defeated Amadhila with 47 votes to 45 votes.

Amadhila is said to have won the contest with 65 votes compared to 26 votes for Mwiyale during the previous conference which was nullified by the secretariat of the Swapo-Party due to the alleged irregularities experienced in the election process.

“Tona is the one who could not be re-elected, because even all members of the delegation, which is to represent the region during the party’s national conference to be held towards the end of the year, have retained their position,” the source argued.

Omusati Region with a population of 228 842 inhabitants, as per the 2001 census indicators, is one of the Swapo-Party stronghold regions in the country.
