WINDOEK: The Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) Central Committee has endorsed the nomination of Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development Jerry Ekandjo for the position of Swapo vice-president, come 29 October this year.
“The SPYL Central Committee has noted, without any objection whatsoever, the indication of the SPYL Secretary Elijah Ngurare to nominate Ekandjo for the position of vice-president of Swapo at the Swapo-Party Central Committee meeting slated towards the end of October,” said SPYL Secretary for Information, Publicity and Mobilisation, Job Amupanda during a media briefing on Sunday.
The youth wing’s central committee meeting took place on Saturday.
Ngurare is the sole candidate from the youth wing to attend the Swapo-Party Central Committee meeting, but 15 people from the SPYL will attend the Swapo-Party Congress to take place towards the end of this year.
Ekandjo will be the third candidate for the Swapo-Party vice presidency, following the earlier nomination of Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Hage Geingob and Minister of Justice Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana.
Geingob was nominated at the party’s Politburo meeting earlier this month by virtue of being the current vice-president of the party, possibly paving the way for him to become president of the country in two years’ time.
Politburo member Uutoni Nujoma nominated current Swapo-Party Secretary-General (SG) Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana for the position of vice-president during the same meeting.
